By Susan Collins, B.F.A.

Sometimes we feel uncomfortable in our homes – we may experience chronic, unexplained illnesses, our pets may suffer, we may have prosperity issues, or just have trouble sleeping. A dowser, sometimes referred to as geomancer, can help identify and rectify possible causes of these problems by checking the earth energies of a place and aligning them with the people who are living there. Dowsers are well known as “water witchers”, people who find the energy of water, but we can also find the energy of plants, animals, people and just about anything else in this vast universe by “talking” with the earth.

I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis over twenty years ago, and spent many years struggling with both western and alternative medicine trying to regain my health. When I began dowsing, I started to listen more closely to my body and learned to test my foods and my environment to make sure that what I ate, how I exercised, and where I lived were beneficial to my health. I discovered that there are different types of energy grids on the earth, and that some of them went right through my house! Dowsing helped me find “hot spots” that didn’t agree with me, and I learned how to avoid and actually transform the energies so they would support my health.

Dowsing, the detection and transformation of energy, is an ancient, powerful skill that anyone can develop with desire and patience by focusing their mind and listening to their body. But what is dowsing really? It’s almost an umbrella term for a practice that is used in many modern holistic modalities based on energy such as reiki, homeopathy, naturopathy, Feng Shui, hypnosis, kinesiology, sound healing and more.

For me, dowsing is primarily a tool that I use to find out more about the world and my place in it. I can do this for myself, any time, anywhere. I also find it handy for getting convenient parking spaces and deciding where to plant my flowers! The widely practical application of the skill is the reason I’ve been drawn to it and the Canadian Society of Dowsers over the years. Someone once said that “dowsers know how to know” and it seems to be true. With simple tools, we can easily break down complex problems into simple chunks, and then narrow down our questions until we arrive at an answer.

Whether I am measuring the energy field of a crop circle or a person, the procedure is basically the same. I focus my intent, align myself with the Divine Source, and ask for a true answer. The tools themselves, the pendulums and rods, have no magic power, just as a hammer has no power until we pick it up. Our bodies are the primary tools.

Of course one doesn’t give one’s decision-making power over to the pendulum. This is a free will planet, and we are free to choose our path and to make our own mistakes as we go. Folks who use dowsing as a research tool can often get a unique perspective on an issue that would otherwise be unavailable to them. And of course no intuitive tool is meant to replace traditional medicine for diagnosis or treatment. But for those who want to learn to trust their body’s natural knowing, dowsing can be very useful.

How Do I Use a Pendulum?

(Excerpted from Susan’s book Bridge Matter and Spirit With Dowsing available at selected stores and through www.dowser.ca)

The basic movements indicate swinging back and forth either away from you or across your body, and swinging in circles. There are other subtle movements that you will begin to recognize as you develop a personal vocabulary.

The first step is determining what your responses mean.  Yours may be different from another person's.

– Hold the string between your thumb and first finger, about 10 cm (3 inches) from the weight at the end.

– While slowly swinging the pendulum back and forth, say (mentally or out loud) “Pendulum, show me YES”. The pendulum will move.

– If there is no response, swing the pendulum clockwise for a few seconds (if that is what you’d like your YES response to be), and say: “Pendulum this is my YES.” Then repeat the question "Pendulum, show me what my YES is." Keep doing this until the pendulum moves on its own.

– Repeat these steps for a NO response.

– Ask for your MAYBE response.

Test your responses with questions you know the answers to.

Pendulum Exercise:

How to test foods with a Pendulum

Once you are familiar with using a pendulum, you can use it to test which foods support your health. You can start by taking some of the regular foods out of your fridge and cupboard. Set them on the counter, and then, holding the pendulum over the foods one at a time, ask if eating that food will support your health. (Don’t ask if it’s “good for you”, because the pendulum may say YES if it tastes good, not if it is healthy for you.) You can refine this exercise by using a ray chart numbered from minus ten to plus ten. For me, I get a NO from the pendulum for most un-peeled apples, and a swing to minus 4 on the chart. Obviously I want to eat foods that are on the plus side of the chart. This is a great way to test for food sensitivities.

How do I Use L-Rods?

(Excerpted from Susan’s book Bridge Matter and Spirit With Dowsing available at selected stores and through www.dowser.ca)

There are 3 basic positions: READY, POINT TO, and FOUND.

– The READY Position: Hold the rod in your fist. With a rod in each hand, and your elbows bent at 90 degree angles, hold the rods pointing away from your body and parallel to the ground with the tips slightly down.

– The POINT TO Position: Ask the rods to point to the thing you are looking for. The rods will simply swing in the direction that the target is located.

– The FOUND Position: Ask your rods to cross (or open) when they are on top of the target and begin walking in the direction the rods have pointed to. FOUND may be crossed rods, or open rods depending on what you decide. Either way works fine as long as you are consistent.

L-Rod Exercise: How to find a “hot spot” in your home with L-rods

Once you are familiar with using L-rods, you’re ready to find places in your home that are either non-beneficial or beneficial to you. For this exercise, let’s find a beneficial place. Stand in the ready position, and ask if there is a spot that is beneficial to you in the room. Very likely the rods will swing to YES. Ask the rods to point to that spot, and as the rods begin to swing, move your body so that you are in line with the direction that the rods are pointing. (If the rods swing in a continuous circle, it means you are already standing on your beneficial spot.)

Ask the rods to cross when you get to your beneficial spot, and walk forward slowly until the rods cross. You’re there. Now drop your arms, close your eyes, and ask to receive the beneficial energy available to you in that place. You can repeat the procedure to find spots that will provide specific balancing. For example you could ask to find a place that will help you relax, or to make you feel happy. If you identify a non-beneficial spot, you can avoid it, or ask to transform it to beneficial. Try it!

Hydrogen Peroxide for your Pool

Hydrogen Peroxide is a heaven sent solution to pool treatment, but you must be diligent – thoroughly maintain a clean pool and a clean filter and always check your Hydrogen Peroxide levels.

Why do people switch to H2O2 for their pools?

While some switch for reasons of personal health (pool chemicals are very harmful), most have a more basic reason. They just want to enjoy using their pool.

The main reason people with pools rarely use - or even sit by - their pool is due to an instinctive health repulsion their bodies feel and they sub-consciously recognize the dangers. The water and area smell of chemicals. The water stings their eyes and turns them red.

People familiar with the H2O2 treatment for pools will not use toxic pool chemicals. It is not surprising that people do not want to relax or swim in toxic chemicals or breathe toxic fumes. Rather, they want to relax in pure, healthy, and clean water.

Why does the City of Toronto by-law state that chlorine laden swimming pool water must not be dumped into our storm sewers?

Many municipalities have banned the practice by homeowners, of dumping their pool water into city storm sewers. Water from the storm sewers flows untreated directly into Lake Ontario, or nearby watercourses such as rivers, creeks or streams. Pool water contains chlorine that kills harmful bacteria and/or algae, but when chlorinated pool water is discharged into the storm water system it can harm, or even kill, fish and other aquatic life.

How does Hydrogen Peroxide work?

Hydrogen Peroxide is the molecule H2O2. This means it has water (h2o) and an extra oxygen atom that is attached. It is only semi-stable. Contact with organic substances of any kind, with a short list of minerals or U.V. light (such as sunlight) causes it to decompose. This means it releases the extra oxygen atoms in a gaseous form of 100% pure oxygen and what remains is 100% pure water.

H2O2 will kill simple organisms on the molecular level. It does so by decomposing to pure water and pure oxygen when coming in contact with organic substances of any kind. In a pool, it acts similarly to the human immune system, in which the immune system attacks foreign object, but do not harm the larger life form (you.) This is how H2O2 works; it uses pure oxygen against micro organisms.

 Is Hydrogen Peroxide toxic?

H2O2 as a pool treatment is neither toxic nor harmful; it actually is good for your skin by oxygenating skin (rather than bleaching and poisoning it).

As the elements of H2O2 are only pure water and pure oxygen, it will naturally decompose in its usage cycle for 100% decomposition into pure and safe molecules of water and oxygen only. Thus, there is no chemical build up or conversion to other chemicals.

What are the Safety Issues for 35% Hydrogen Peroxide?

There are danger factors concerning handling of 35% Hydrogen Peroxide that applies to all chemicals in general. It is highly concentrated and if undiluted will sting a person's skin. If you spill 35% Hydrogen Peroxide on you, in a few seconds your skin will start to sting and turn white where contact was made. The "treatment" is to quickly wash the area off with water. Your skin will continue to sting for a few minutes and will turn light yellow or white where there was contact. Within half an hour to an hour, skin color will return to normal. There will be no scarring and no toxins will have entered the body as H2O2 has no toxins.

The only safety issue of highly concentrated Hydrogen Peroxide is to avoid splashing it on yourself or in your eyes, and to store it away from children or incompetent adults. H2O2 should ALWAYS be stored in a dark and cool location. UV light causes H2O2 to decompose. Carry H2O2 in the trunk of your car when moving it.

Is Hydrogen Peroxide safe for my pool filter and pump?

Hydrogen Peroxide in a concentrated form can damage natural rubber and certain metals (silver). Most pools use plastic, steel, synthetic "rubber", fibreglass and stainless steel, those would not be harmed.

Please check with your pool manufacturer before using.

Most pool owners who use H2O2 for their pool add it at night, turn off the pump and forget about it. During the night the molecules of H2O2 will destroy micro-organisms. The next day, the sun will reduce the H2O2 concentration further. Test your H2O2 levels. The pool owner can turn on the pump at anytime.

Most bleach, chlorine and pool chemicals also harm rubber - and unlike H2O2 they also build up chemical film. So IF you have natural rubber fittings and IF you pour in lots of H2O2 over and over like other pool chemicals, it could damage your seals, fittings and pump like other pool chemicals ultimately do.

How do I use Hydrogen Peroxide in my pool?

For a pool, it is not necessary to drain the pool when you add H2O2 if you are using pool chemicals. Hydrogen Peroxide will not have any adverse reaction or interaction with the pool chemicals. The level of H2O2 suggested below will vary by the amount of organic material that comes into the water (leaves, dust) and by pool usage that then also brings contaminating organics into the water.

Getting started -

Many recommend shocking your pool to start using Hydrogen Peroxide.

To “SHOCK” your pool, a relatively high level is used at a ratio of 1 cup of 35% concentration for every 250 gallons. DO NOT RUN your pump continuously. Rather, run it only long enough to circulate the water and then turn off the pump. Ideally, you should add the H2O2 at sunset and allow the water to sit 24 hours before turning the pump back on. The pool may be used afterwards.                    It is NOT necessary to shock your pool if you are starting with fresh water.

Maintenance -

This depends quite a bit on the water source and the amount of organic materials that enter the water (dust, leaves, number of people using the pool etc.)  If you are starting with new water, a good starting point is 1 cup of 35% H2O2 for every 500 gallons of water. Use test strips regularly to keep the concentration level of H2O2 measuring between 50 and 100 ppm.

H2O2 interacts with and oxidizes organic materials and decomposes with UV light.  This is one reason that H2O2 must be added from time to time to maintain its level in the water. There is no danger of H2O2 levels increasing or forming dangerous residual chemicals.

CHECK YOUR FILTERS OFTEN: As with any pool with a filtration system, you should regularly check your filter(s) as clogged filters will damage some pumping systems.

STORAGE: H2O2 should ALWAYS be stored in a dark and cool location. UV light causes H2O2 to decompose.

CAUTION: Wear plastic gloves and safety goggles when adding H2O2 to the water as it can splash or spill. You simply add the Hydrogen Peroxide to the water and no special injection system is necessary.
