A non-profit organization helping farmers, gardeners, and consumers understand and transition to organic growing and eating. By donating to or volunteering for COG, you can help give it the clout it needs to support consumers and growers of organic food. The Toronto chapter presents speakers and panel discussions on organic food and food production, hosts an annual conference in February in downtown Toronto, promotes organics by participation in public events, updates a directory for the GTA area, and produces a regular newsletter for members. COG Toronto has recently embarked on a project called “Off Our Plates,” which helps restaurants, schools, and daycare kitchens remove genetically modified organisms (GMOs) from their menus. Watch out for Organic Week, a week-long, national celebration of organic food and the producers of organic food. This year it will be October 15 to 22.

Guelph Organic Conference & Expo

Guelph Organic Conference & Expo

Trade Show - January 26-29, 2012 - Expo runs January 28-29

The 2012 theme is Seeds of Co-operation – a simple title reflecting a complexity of issues in the organic sector. Also, 2012 is the U.N.’s International Year of Co-operatives. Savvy growers know that “organic succeeds by co-operating” and you’ll never find a more co-operative sharing of info than in January at the Guelph University Centre.

Now in year 31, this is Canada’s longest running organic marketing event. Guelph is where organic consumers unite with successful organic businesses and co-ops. The buzz at noon on Saturday in the middle of the Expo is like no other in Canada.

Looking through the 4-day list of 35 workshops, enthusiasts can learn: how to grow and market organic seeds; about organic worker co-ops; about large-scale organic grain and livestock businesses; about successful large-scale organic market gardens, as well as ‘profiting from your own one acre.’ Food hubs, forest gardening, the organic youth stream, plus social media marketing help round out the show. Workshops are economically priced with pre-registration options, open on Nov. 1st. An Organic Dinner and Keynote Forum are 2 other highlights.

The Organic Expo features over 30 organic food sampling booths among the 155 tables. This Expo/Tasting Fair is free to consumers and retail shoppers who want to meet and purchase from organic food suppliers. Smart shoppers come prepared with cash and carry-bags for organic chocolate, cheeses, jams, miso, coffee, pickles, vegetables, books, seeds, small farm and garden equipment. Vitality Magazine is a valued Organic Media Partner.
