CSA; FG; FM: This working organic dairy farm, founded in 1999 by Ineke Booy and Martin de Groot, consists of 450 acres of certified organic land, 70 milking cows, chickens, turkeys, pigs, donkeys, alpacas, and a pony. They process milk into organic ice cream, and frozen and fresh yogurt, served in a cosy ice cream café. Today, Mapleton’s serves organic lunches and packaged organic products, including dairy, meats, dry goods, and seasonal produce. The farm offers a demonstration barnyard that is open to the public year-round, a two-acre cedar hedge maze with a pirate ship in the middle, a picnic area, and a destination to host birthday parties. Sadly, Avalon Orchards will not be open for pick-your-own in 2017; it will be reopening in 2018. After an amazing crop last year, the orchard has decided to take a rest, as they had very little blossom and fruit set. They will continue producing their pasteurized organic apple cider and look forward to hosting visitors in 2018.

A non-profit charity for over 40 years, COG helps farmers, gardeners, and consumers transition to and learn about organic growing and eating. Donating to or volunteering for COG gives COG the clout to support consumers and growers of organic food. COG chapters present speakers and panel discussions, promote organics at public events, and plan farm trips. Participants in the Toronto chapter of COG can help the area’s organic movement, learn about organic issues, find sources of organic food, improve people’s health, and care for the environment. Watch for Organic Week, Sept. 16 to 24 – a week-long national celebration of organic food.

GUELPH ORGANIC CONFERENCE & TRADE SHOW 2018

The 37th Annual Guelph Organic Conference & Trade Show is the event “Where Farmers & Consumers Meet.” It is held in the Guelph University Centre. This free two-day trade show (January 27 to 28) promises a stimulating weekend organic sampling experience. Organic consumers who support organic farming can talk directly with certified organic growers, organic product distributors, and retailers as well as market garden and permaculture experts. Are you planning your own farm? Organic soil and crop consultants in the trade show will guide you. Simply walk into the Guelph University Centre, hang up your coat and enjoy a stimulating walk-about with almost 40 organic sampling booths (the trade show totals over 160 tables). Shoppers can buy directly from organic food suppliers – stock up on organic chocolate, cheeses, jams, miso, coffee, cranberry juice, pickles, vegetables, organic cereal samples, books, seeds and small equipment flyers. Don’t forget to bring cash and your carry bags. The website will be continually updated with new information. The full 43-workshop program includes talks and sessions on small-scale root cellars, how to start your market garden, caring for your organic livestock, and how to be an informed organic consumer. The range of topics to be covered includes: Big Carrot Nutritionists/Current Organic Nutritional Research [a free January 28 workshop], Flower Production, Organic Garlic Production, Urban Habitat For Pollinators, as well as Indoor Gardening and Seed Production For Beginners.

In total, over 55 speakers are on the program. Workshop registration opens November 1. Other special events during the four-day conference include the Friday, January 26 Organic Food and Wine Dinner for 200 guests. That evening, a keynote forum panel, “Resilient Agriculture In The Face of Climate Change,” will complete the day’s highlights.
