Private Showings of the Celestial Harp

 

In studio at 91B Edward St., Aurora. $250. for groups of up to 10 people. The Celestial Harp is the only instrument of its kind in the world. It is both a percussive and acoustic musical instrument. Several people can play it at the same time.

 

There are 72 strings, each radiating out form a central hub. Of these there are 8 double strings. The Celestial harp was designed on the principles of the I Ching and Astrology. Each string relates to one of the 64 I Ching hexagrams. Every five or six strings relate to one of the signs of the Zodiac. The constellations are inlaid on the body of the harp and the 64 hexagrams are inlaid in the bridge. There are frets for each string increasing the range and scales that can be played.

 

The Celestial Harp can be plucked, strummed, warped, hammered, slid and ebowed. It is an incredible sound generator. It resonates even when sounds are played or sung near it.

 

The structure of an instrument conditions the attitude of the musician and thereby influences the nature of the music played. The Celestial Harp changes one's relationship to sound. Most people are used to thinking of musical scales in a straight sequence and hearing music in a stereo format. The music of the Celestial harp radiates out in all directions. The scales fluctuate ascending and descending as one moves around the instrument like waves in an oceans. Because the harp is circular there is no beginning or end. This presents new musical challenges and opens new horizons for creative expression.

 

The showings will last approximately seventy-five minutes during which time Robin will explain the history, the mechanics and the scales on the harp. He will play a few pieces for you and answer questions.
