The sun has been cited as the No.1 source of hyper-pigmentation, aging and, of course, skin cancer. While the need for a sunblock is unarguable, we still must make good choices.

Healthy Product News

Gotu Kola – Eastern Herb Combats Eczema, Psoriasis, Mental Stress – and Even Cancer
Report by Julia Woodford

According to the website Plants for a Future, Gotu kola (Umbelliferae) is an outstandingly important medicinal herb that is widely used in the Orient and is becoming increasingly popular in the West. Its Indian name is ‘Brahmi’ which means ‘bringing knowledge of the Supreme Reality’ and it has long been used in India both medicinally and as an aid to meditation because of its great ability to relax the brain, particularly when it’s on overdrive and cannot focus efficiently. In India it is chiefly valued as a revitalizing herb that strengthens nervous function and memory, so is used as an anti-aging herb to prevent senility. Gotu Kola has in fact been used on people of all ages (including children) to improve mental functioning.

It is also a useful tonic and cleansing herb for skin problems. According to Herbal Medicine, Healing and Cancer by Donald R. Yance, MH, AHG, Gotu Kola is used for healing many skin afflictions including eczema, psoriasis, and leg ulcers. This is likely due to the fact that it’s a powerful blood purifier (many skin disorders are caused by toxic overload in the blood and tissues). Taken internally, Gotu Kola is used in treatment of wounds, chronic skin conditions (including leprosy), venereal diseases, malaria, and varicose veins. Externally, the herb is applied to wounds, haemorrhoids and rheumatic joints.

In regards to its role in addressing cancer, Yance states: “I believe this is one of the best herbs for people with cancer, and I now recommend its use more than ever before.” He points to research by scientists at the Amala Research Centre in Kerala, India, who have tested gotu kola against cultured tumour cells and found that it was effective in “destroying 100% of the cultured tumour cells. The gotu kola used was a 5:1 concentrated extract. It was completely non-toxic to healthy cells, thereby displaying its selective toxicity to tumour cells only. In follow-up studies on animals, gotu kola extract more than doubled the life span of mice with tumours and displayed a remarkable lack of toxicity.”

An evergreen perennial native to China, India, and Japan, Gotu Kola is also said to increase intelligence and longevity because it cleanses and feeds the immune system, while strengthening the adrenals.

Precaution: In some cases, Gotu Kola can aggravate itching, and excessively large doses taken internally may cause headaches and transient unconsciousness.

Organic raw Gotu Kola powder is now being imported to Toronto from India by Advantage Health Matters. Certified organic by three different agencies, this Organic Traditions product is available in a 200 gram package, and sells for $11.49 at the Big Carrot Dispensary.

For daily use of Gotu Kola to improve memory and reduce stress, or to cleanse and cool the blood (summer is a great time of year for detoxing), Francis Ashwagandha, MH, recommends combining it with Bringaraja since these two herbs have good affinity for each other. Prepare a hot or cold infusion using purified water (add ground herb to boiling water, then steep and let cool). Or simmer the herbs in milk and then strain. For topical use, Gotu Kola can be prepared as a medicinal oil. For more information, talk to Francis at the Big Carrot, or consult with an Ayurvedic herbalists or a Chinese Medicine practitioner.

To contact the Big Carrot Dispensary at 348 Danforth Ave in Toronto, call (416) 466-8432. To reach Advantage Health Matters, call (905) 946-1011, or email.

Homeopathy for Asthma and Environmental Allergies

by Christopher De Barros, BSc, DHMS, HD.

As the summer rolls around, more and more people venture outdoors to enjoy the warm weather. Unfortunately, for a growing number of Canadians, asthma has become a problem that is difficult to manage in these weather conditions. While it is normally a year-round ailment, the increased heat, humidity and pollution associated with Canadian summers can pose a real threat to the wellbeing of many. Asthma is a chronic condition that causes the obstruction of the airways through inflammation. Not everyone will exhibit the same symptoms. However, in many cases we see tightness of the chest, wheezing, coughing and severe shortness of breath.

Green Files

City Slickers Go to the Farm – Propelled by the New Apprentice Farmer Program
by Sarah Dobec

There is a wonderful trend developing on the planet that is stirring us to know the origins of our vegetables and the people who grow them. Simply note the number of new farmer’s markets in Toronto alone and there is clearly a growing interest in local food. Consumers get a certain satisfaction from the weekly journey to the market, hand picking seasonal vegetables and fruit and then developing a healthy meal around what is available that week.

Maybe you have been drawn to consider the life of the farmer on the opposite side of the beets, carrots and arugula. They are friendly, knowledgeable of tomato varieties, healthy, tanned and easy going. Seems intriguing to grow food but what is the life of a farmer like? If you have ever wanted to learn more about farming there is a program developed specifically for this experience.

CRAFT – Collaborative Regional Apprentice Farmer Training is a wordy title for a program that allows those who might not have the opportunity to farm to give it a try. Fourteen farms across Southwestern Ontario open their barn doors to over 40 apprentices who want to experience farm life and potentially become new farmers of the future. While each farm is very different in size and focus the similarities lie in their willingness to teach, house and feed their apprentices for the entire growing season. In return you sign on to work hard, get dirty and learn.

These farms are in full swing now, the apprentices accustomed to the early mornings, dirty fingernails and sore muscles. The purpose of CRAFT is to educate participants about organic farming practices with a hands on approach. Each farm has a slightly different agenda, yet each is committed to teaching growing techniques, farm management and the importance of building the organic farming community.

Each month the farmers congregate on one property, the host farm, to learn what is unique about that land and its production – perhaps the farm is biodynamic or works solely by horsepower. The 40+ participants then partake in a group project as a thank you to the host farm and help perform a task that could be anything from weeding a large garden bed to raising a barn. Several farms have additional educational trips to places such as the Ontario Food Terminal, seed companies, and larger organic operations. Education is an integral part of the CRAFT experience.

Another unique aspect of the CRAFT program is the commitment to the entire growing season. You are able to learn everything from seeding in the greenhouse while the ground is still frosty, transplanting, tending, harvesting and cover cropping at the end of the season. Some farms have livestock and incorporate animal chores into the apprentice position. Many of the farms participate in a local farmer’s market that involves a regular trip to town with that week’s harvest. The organic market stalls open customer’s eyes to the options and difference between conventionally farmed foods and organic ones. This involvement in the community gives people the opportunity to talk to the farmers and ask questions about organics.

Most of the farms operate CSA gardens. A CSA – Community Supported Agriculture – is an arrangement where members of the garden buy shares in advance of the season providing the farmer with financial means to buy seeds and supplies. The members then receive weekly deliveries of fresh, seasonal produce throughout the growing season. This unique arrangement encourages members to get to know their farmer and know who is growing their food. Many farms expect the members to volunteer a few hours a month. Getting hands-on experience (and a little dirty) helps the member to truly appreciate the hard work involved in organic farming and creates a community around that farm. CSA farms commonly distribute a weekly newsletter with a list of the basket contents for that week as well as recipes often submitted by the members. This unique approach to purchasing produce introduces the members to products they may never have tried before, adds variety to their diets, and teaches them about seasonal cooking.

Committing to five or more months may seem difficult for most people, however CRAFT can be compared to the traditional three to six month trip to Europe experienced by many people who need to break out of their usual routines and are searching for something they cannot find at home – a new experience and perhaps even a new life’s purpose. A summer spent farming can be life altering for many. Several CRAFT apprentices have gone onto starting their own farms, CSAs, and similar businesses. These start ups have sparked the need for further programs such as Farm Start that helps support new farm enterprises and Farmers Growing Farmers (a mentorship program for new farmers).

A program like CRAFT ensures that small, organic farming practices are not lost to the “superstore” attitude of food. It allows even the urbanite a short-term chance to be a farmer, and as issues such as food security and world food shortages become the forefront of global news, the knowledge of growing food will become more of a necessity rather than a hobby. We might even find ourselves consulting with our grandparents and aged population for their gardening wisdom.

For more information link to CRAFT, Farm Start, or Farmers Growing Farmers.

Ten Universal Laws for Successful Manifestation

People are writing about it as though it is something new, but The Law of Attraction and all other universal laws have existed since the beginning of time. The creation of all that is, our entire existence, is governed by subtle universal laws. We cannot see them, but we know they are present. For example, we know that “what goes up must come down.” This is a universal law. We also know that when we work with them, our thoughts and actions are aligned with divine flow and ease, and when we work against them, we create struggle and disease. When we understand the innate nature of these laws, we become better at manifesting in our lives. Here are ten of the universal laws that you need to know to successfully manifest what you want in your life:

Regulation Chinese Herbs in Canada – What’s at Stake?

 By Adina Stanescu, C.Ac. DCHM

Many TCM practitioners and patients do not have a clear idea of how Health Canada’s Natural Health Product (NHP) regulations, or the proposed Bill C51, will affect the practice and accessibility of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in Canada. Indeed, these regulations have already begun to affect us, and we had better try to understand them so that we don’t find ourselves with our hands tied behind our backs, unable to provide or receive the health care we need.

Health Canada introduced NHP regulations in 2004 to govern the use of herbs (including Chinese herbs), vitamins, nutritional supplements and homeopathic medicines in Canada. Bill C 51, recently introduced in the House, proposes to give Health Canada more power to summarily enforce the NHP regulations. The fear is that this enforcement will be arbitrary and alarmist, and not necessarily based on a real risk of harm to the public, but merely on “suspicion of harm.” Who will be the arbiter of this suspicion, and what medical qualifications will they possess, for example in the highly complex medicine of TCM?

First, let’s look at which products and participants in the “supply chain” of TCM are covered under the NHP regulations.

Homeopathic Medicine for PMS and Menstrual Discomforts

By: Miriam McCrea Malevris, DS Hom.Med.

If menstruation is a normal, natural event, why is it that so many of us have issues with our cycles? In many traditional cultures, the time of menstrual flow is considered a period of cleansing and regeneration, even celebration. For many Western women however, menstruation may represent anything from a mild inconvenience to substantial distress – something embarrassing that “happens” to us. More often than not, we live in dread of our monthly cycle.

Governed by the endocrine system, the menstrual cycle is regulated by a complex interaction of hormones: luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), estrogen and progesterone, and is divided into three unique phases: follicular, ovulatory and luteal. Spanning an average of 28 days, the entire process is like a well-choreographed dance, with each phase relying on a specific and extremely delicate hormonal balance.

Unfortunately, environmental factors such as artificial light and the onslaught of pollutants we’re exposed to on a daily basis have disrupted our circadian rhythms and compromised our hormonal health.

In the days before electricity, the moon was our main source of nocturnal light. Women's bodies were influenced by the amount of moonlight we perceived, and our hormones were duly triggered. All women cycled together. In modern society with round-the-clock artificial light, remaining in sync with nature’s cycles is a serious challenge.

To compound the matter, we are the first generation to be exposed to an unprecedented amount of toxic environmental chemicals, a direct result of increased industry following World War II. These chemicals – derived from plastics, petroleum, pesticides, food additives and more – disturb endocrine balance by mimicking estrogen in the body. Dubbed “xenoestrogens”, these foreign estrogens have given rise to numerous symptoms and conditions related to hormonal imbalance, such as menstrual irregularities, infertility, fibroids, and cancer.

It is therefore not surprising that menstrual cycles don’t run smoothly for every woman, every month. Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) and Dysmenorrhea are common experiences to all women who menstruate. PMS refers to the complexity of symptoms women experience as a result of high hormone levels before, and sometimes during, their periods. Big Pharma has created a niche market to treat PMS (a physiologically normal part of a woman's cycle) as a disease. There is big money in PMS! We often joke about it, but for sufferers PMS is no laughing matter. Symptoms may include: anxiety, irritability, mood swings, sugar/chocolate cravings, bloating, spotting, fatigue, acne, and headaches. The term Dysmenorrhea refers to severe, disabling cramps associated with the menstrual period. Symptoms vary from woman to woman, and may include backache, leg pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, and dizziness. (Secondary Dysmenorrhea, which refers to severe menstrual pain resulting from an underlying condition such as Pelvic Inflammatory Disease or Endometriosis, will not be discussed here.)

Fortunately, there are several natural treatment options for those looking to balance their hormones and relieve menstrual discomforts, without resorting to prescription medication. Homeopathy, developed in present-day Germany over 200 years ago by physician and hygienist Samuel Hahnemann, is a system of natural medicine that encourages the body to rebalance itself. It is safe, gentle and non-invasive, as well as effective in treating a variety of mental, emotional and physical complaints. Treatment with Classical Homeopathy involves taking a detailed case history encompassing your chief health concerns, an overview of all body systems, and the health history of your family. Based on the information gathered, a single homeopathic remedy is selected specifically for you, intended to stimulate your body’s natural healing mechanisms.

Here are some homeopathic remedies, along with their guiding symptoms, to consider for menstrual discomforts:

Calcarea Carbonica is a wonderful remedy for women's issues. It is indicated in cases of profuse menstruation. The menstrual cycle is typically abnormal, often coming on too early and lasting too long. PMS symptoms typically include fatigue, weight gain, water retention, and tender breasts. Often feelings of being overwhelmed and/or anxious will accompany the physical symptoms. Other symptoms indicating Calcarea include a general feeling of chilliness, clammy hands and feet, and extreme hunger.

Consider Chamomilla in cases where pain seems unbearable. Patients requiring Chamomilla are likely to be angry, irritable and sensitive to the extreme. The menstrual flow itself is typically heavy, and the blood may look dark or clotted. The pain, often described as labour-like, can extend from the pelvic region to the thighs, and may be worse at night or with use of a heating pad. Vigorous walking or moving around in other ways may help relieve the pain.

Patients requiring Colocynthis may experience cramping focused in the ovarian region or throughout the pelvis. Pains are of a sharp, cutting nature, causing the sufferer to double over and clutch their abdomen. The woman feels restless from the pain, however lying down and applying hard pressure and warmth on the abdomen provides temporary relief. This remedy is often indicated if the symptoms are worsened by emotional upsets, especially after feeling or suppressing anger.

A woman who needs Lachesis is fiery, intense and sensual, desperately needing an outlet. Women who suffer acutely from premenstrual discomfort, but feel much better once the flow is established, may benefit from this remedy. Other guiding symptoms include flushes of heat, headache, increased sex drive, left sided complaints, palpitations and an inability to tolerate tight clothing around the neck or waist.

If extreme sweets cravings are an issue, think about Lycopodium. Symptoms include excessive gas and bloating with a painful, distended abdomen. There is likely to be a tendency to ailments affecting the right side of the body. General energy and moods may take a dip between 4 and 8 pm.

Natrum Muriaticum, derived from sodium chloride, is often prescribed for menstrual problems accompanied by headache or migraines. Head pain tends to be of a bursting, hammering, blinding nature. Natrum personalities are generally private and reserved, and can be easily affronted over trivial issues. Immoderate thirst, a tendency towards cold sores and a general worsening from sun exposure are other indications for this remedy.

Delayed, scanty or suppressed menstrual flow suggests the use of Pulsatilla. Patients requiring this remedy are generally thirstless, and aggravated by getting too warm or being in a stuffy room. Pulsatilla's moods can be described as changeable, fickle or indecisive. She desires sympathy and attention and is often emotionally sensitive. This remedy is particularly (but not exclusively) useful in times of transition, such as puberty and menopause.

With its broad sphere of action over the female organism, Sepia is one of the more frequently prescribed remedies in cases of menstrual irregularities. Women requiring Sepia are irritable, indifferent and disconnected. Those close to her are likely to be on the receiving end of harsh, cutting words. Guiding symptoms include painful, late, or suppressed menstruation, chilliness, perspiring, headache before, during or after menses, varicosities and constipation. In Sepia there is often a feeling that the pelvic floor is weak, to the point that she will want to sit with her legs crossed. Warmth and exercise, especially dancing, often improve Sepia's outlook.

While a well-chosen homeopathic remedy can do wonders, often within 2 to 3 cycles, bear in mind that the quality of your diet directly influences hormonal function. Here are some easy suggestions: Eliminate processed, refined or genetically modified foods. Invest in a food additives dictionary and start reading labels – a scary but worthwhile exercise. Choosing whole grains, meat and dairy products from natural and ethical farms, plus raw nuts and seeds, cold-pressed oils, and fresh fruits and vegetables is a good place to start. Go organic and reduce your exposure to xenoestrogens at the same time!

Supplementing with magnesium may benefit nervousness, cramping, constipation, backache and headache associated with the menstrual cycle. Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), with its mild diuretic effect, is well-known for treating PMS-related breast swelling and tenderness as well as water retention. Additionally, Vitamin B6 enhances absorption and retention of magnesium in the body. Studies have shown the efficacy of Omega-3 supplementation in the reduction of menstrual cramps. Look for pharmaceutical-grade fish oil or DHA-enriched flaxseed oil. Finally, aim for 30g of dietary soluble fibre, such as chia or ground flax, to prevent reabsorption of excess estrogen into the bloodstream.

New Roots Herbal has created a high nutrient formula called Chill Pills, which serves to nourish the nervous system, heighten mental alertness, and provide focus and clarity all day. By reducing stress with this type of herbal support, people can function more efficiently at home and work, while preserving the strength and integrity of their nerves, tissues, and hormones. Lowering stress also works to reduce cortisol levels (stress hormone) in the blood, thereby reducing the risk of heart attack and obesity.

This formula contains herbs from both east and west, many of which have a long history of use in folklore medicine:

 • Ashwagandha Root has been used by Ayurvedic practitioners for over 3000 years as a mood-stabilizer and to support healthy immune system function. Ashwagandha, also known as “Winter Cherry,” improves the body's ability to maintain physical effort and adapt to various types of stress.
 • Magnolia is rich in the phytochemicals honokiol and magnolol, which have numerous health benefits. One of the most impressive benefits is magnolia’s ability to alleviate stress and anxiety while producing a noticeable relaxing effect on the central nervous system, without producing a sedating side effect.
 • Phellodendron works especially well in combination with magnolia to help support normal levels of cortisol and DHEA, hormones in the body that promote the management of stress related symptoms.
Magnolia and phellodendron work by binding to stress receptors in the nervous system to promote relaxation and feelings of well being while ignoring receptors associated with sedation.
• Red Jujube (Da Zao) in traditional Chinese medicine is considered to be sweet and sour in taste, and neutral in action. It is believed to nourish the heart yin, augment the liver blood, and most importantly for this formula, calm the spirit. It is also used to treat irritability, insomnia and heart palpitations.
• Royal Jelly is taken extensively to promote energy and health and is considered by many to be a potent anti-oxidant. Produced in the beehive for the nourishment of the queen bee, it is a complex substance that cannot be recreated synthetically.

Book Reviews

You Don’t Have to Die to go to Heaven
by Derrick Sweet
Warwick Publishing Inc., 2004

This engaging title is one of several review submissions to Vitality, designed to foster getting in touch with non-tangible qualities. It is as though there is a groundswell afoot to wean us away from material preoccupations and modify our energies. Predictably this is not just about us as individuals but about how we relate to others. Becoming familiar with our higher self is very much part of Derrick Sweet’s plan.

Beliefs and expectations, crafted by our lower self squirrel minds, shape our points of view. The author helps us review attachment, fear, criticism, and judgment, some of the negative elements that have landed us in our present uncomfortable predicaments. Awareness, compassion, and gratitude are keys to turning this around.

Sweet is well able to undertake this philosophical journey. For years he worked as an investment broker, advising clients from Canada to Japan, Spain to Australia. His observation of the fast-paced life and stress-filled situations prompted him to “retire” at the age of 38. He decided to help people recover balance and perspective, gain inner peace, and live life to the fullest extent.

Love of Miracles Triangle: Health-Dowsing Made Simple

 By Jo-Anne Eadie

For millennia, dowsers have worked with the frequencies that seem to be correlated with health, across a wide spectrum of cultures. In fact, you’ve probably seen dowsing in action without knowing what you were looking at. If you’ve ever seen someone use a pendulum to get “yes” and “no” answers to a question, you’ve been a witness to dowsing. Or you may have seen someone at the vitamin counter, holding a bottle to their solar plexus area, swaying back and forth a bit to see if their body’s electrical system reacts positively or negatively to the contents of the bottle. What’s more, many city works departments have a dowser (sometimes called a “diviner” or “water witcher”) on call when their high-tech equipment fails to locate water, gaslines or pipelines.

What you may not know is that dowsers do more than seek out information – they also proactively interact with the energies they find, using focused intention to bring desired changes to the underlying energies that influence people, animals, plants, and places. Typically, dowsers focus on enhancing and increasing beneficial energies, transforming detrimental energies into something useful, and balancing all energies to bring harmony to the land, the atmosphere, and all beings that live there. And don’t confuse the mechanics of dowsing with the tool that monitors “behind-the-scenes” adjustments to non-material frequencies – the pendulums, rods and bobbers we associate with dowsing are simply the indicators that let the dowser take measurements and verify when a frequency-related process is underway and when it is over.

The alternative health field has been expanding in recent years to include healing modalities that require little or no material or physical substances or actions in order to be effective. We are now seeing EFT, Quantum Touch, Reiki, homeopathy and other “energy-based” modalities taking their place in the complementary health playing field. All of this has encouraged dowsing and its practitioners to come out of the woodwork as it were – it’s now time to take seriously the idea that at root, everything is made of the same non-material “stuff” called consciousness that differentiates itself by vibrating at various frequencies. From that point of view, our health can be seen as an ongoing, complex process of balancing and restoring the frequencies of the physical body to their optimal state. Usually the body takes care of its own balancing act. Sometimes though, it needs a boost, and that is where dowsing can be so helpful.

Like many health modalities, dowsing is simple, but it takes some time to learn. Now several dowsers around the world are working to create tools that allow people with little or no dowsing experience to reap the benefits of dowsing without having to learn how.

Here in Canada, one such tool is the Love of Miracles Triangle, developed by Neil F. Anderson, a southern Ontario dairy farmer who has been clearing noxious electro-magnetic and geopathic frequencies from clients’ homes and land for over 10 years. Using a “yes/no” dowsing approach to test intuitively-given information, Neil has designed the Love of Miracles Triangle that can be used by anyone, not just dowsers, to positively transmute the non-beneficial energies held in the brains of the body, stimulating the body’s inherent ability to self-correct.

Neil began by working with an idea prevalent in dowsing circles – that the frequency of love dissolves all. (If you’ve seen Dr. Emoto’s pictures of what the love frequency does to the crystalline structure of water, you’ll have a sense of what I mean.)

First, Neil “dowsed out” that the frequency of love could be represented by the English word “love” and began to experiment on paper with creating an image that used the word “love” in various triangular configurations. As the project developed, he drew on all the knowledge he had amassed so far as a result of his own dowsing journey, including his understanding of how the various “brains” of the body and its organs become congested with challenging “programming” and sometimes even with spirit/entity energies that challenge the body’s natural immunity.

Other input from colleagues in the dowsing world and the alternative health field provided the piece of the puzzle dealing with how word and letter frequencies presented to the subconscious in specific ways (upside-down and backwards) can rapidly release correlating non-beneficial energies that make the body vulnerable to disease. Using “yes/no” questions and testing with a pendulum allowed him to narrow down a list of 10 word frequencies that would cause the brains to “break” and let go of the related registrations that impede the body’s immunity.

Neil then began to test the new device on his own issues and with family and close friends. From the beginning, most users verified that they were experiencing noticeable shifts in their bodies, state of mind, and overall energy. That said, there were still occasions where he had to resort to manually dowsing out energies locked in the brains and his own issues were not completely resolved.

Determined to find that “user-friendly” self-care tool he’d envisioned, he pressed on. More information kept coming to him, involving more experimentation with words, letters and phrases. By the end of 2007, the Love of Miracles Triangle had evolved into a 4-card series that Neil now believes contain all the word/letter/phrase configurations that most users will need to fully restore their body’s natural immunity.
